Choose the route around weather, access and your fitness. A levada walk gives you green tunnels and water channels; a mountain route gives you ridgelines, exposure and the big Atlantic scale.

Trade polished roads for dust, volcanic terrain and viewpoints reached with a little more noise. Book with a reputable operator and treat it as a half-day adventure, not transport.

Walk the volcanic eastern peninsula, then take the long route home only if you still have daylight and legs.

North / forest / repeat
Use the final full day for Fanal, Seixal, Ribeira da Janela, a levada, or the part of the island the weather stole earlier.
